All the objects in Dr. André Bartement's collection are gifts from his African patients. He never bought anything in his life.
Born in 1890, he was drafted into the cavalry in 1914, and was seriously wounded in Lorraine in the early weeks of the war.
At the end of his convalescence, he joined the stretcher-bearer corps, more in keeping with his status as a medical student. He was particularly concerned with soldiers from Africa and Morocco, whom he felt were treated less well than soldiers from mainland France.
This is how he received his first amulets, given to him by his patients and supposed to protect him from the evil eye. He ended the war as a medical officer, assigned from 1917 to the Melun Hospital in Seine-et-Marne. After the war, he settled in Dammarie-en-Lys, in the same département, as a country doctor, where he continued to treat his former war comrades free of charge, particularly the African soldiers who held him in high esteem.
In 1934 and 1936, he also visited Brazzaville, Cotonou and Fort Lamy. His collection was enriched by their gifts, and without really becoming a collector, he was introduced to the culture of the dark continent, thanks above all to the special, tenuous ties he maintained with these men throughout his life.
Hundreds of them attended his funeral in 1964, faithful to their doctor.
From lot 150 to lot 164.
Note: Sincere thanks to Mr. Laurent Mirouze, Militaria Expert, for this confraternal collaboration.
