Portrait of Pierre François Joseph Robert... - Lot 20 - Pousse-Cornet
Portrait of Pierre François Joseph Robert (1763 -1826), a revolutionary who worked for the Republic and who voted for the death of Louis XVI. Miniature. Bears an inscription on the back which identifies it and attributes it to the miniature painter Chéreau. Early 19th century. Oval frame in finely chased bronze. Size: 7,8 x 5,7 cm. It can be compared to the portrait painted in 1792 by Jean Louis Laneuville which has been exhibited in Versailles since 1835. An important politician during the French Revolution, Pierre François Joseph Robert (1763 -1826) was successively a lawyer, a law professor, a journalist and Danton's secretary. He was elected deputy to the Convention by the department of the Seine and was a supplier to the armies until 1808. He was one of the first, along with Condorcet, to advocate the Republic in France. In 1790, he created a newspaper called "Le Mercure National" which defended the idea of Republicanism. He was one of the founders of the Society of Friends of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen in July 1790 or Club des Cordeliers. Robert was also a member of the Society of Friends of the Constitution or Club des Jacobins. In April 1791, he became president of the Club des Cordeliers and, under his influence, women were admitted to it. On July 17, 1791, he wrote a petition on the Champ-de-Mars calling for the advent of the Republic, a prelude to the shooting on the Champ-de-Mars that same day. On 11 August, Danton was appointed Minister of Justice and François Robert became his first secretary. Elected to the National Convention on September 12, 1792 as deputy for Paris, he sits at La Montagne. During the King's trial, he voted for the death of Louis XVI and on 20 January 1793 against the reprieve. A regicide, he had to leave France in 1815 and established himself as a liquor merchant in Belgium.
