A COMMODE with gold varnish decoration of... - Lot 124 - Pousse-Cornet
A COMMODE with gold varnish decoration of lacustrian landscapes animated with pagodas and characters on black backgrounds in the taste of Chinese lacquers; slightly moved, it opens with two drawers without crossbar and rests on cambered feet. Ornamented with chased and gilded bronze such as frames with brackets and scrolls, handles, falls, descents from falls and rocaille sabots. Louis XV period (the decoration has been reworked). Moulded breche d'Alep marble top (old restoration). H : 87 - W : 113 - D : 57 cm. The chest of drawers we propose reflects the fashion for furniture decorated with European varnish called "Martin varnish" in the taste of Chinese or Japanese lacquers. This fashion was freely derived from French creations of the end of the 17th century or the beginning of the following century which followed the meeting of Louis XIV and the ambassadors of the king of Siam in 1686, meeting during which the foreign representatives missioned by their monarch offered many presents to the Sun King. This immediately gave rise to an exceptional craze for objects from the East and, a few decades later, the main consequence was the adaptation of oriental lacquer panels on Parisian cabinetry. The very high cost of lacquer panels, mainly recovered from cabinets or screens, quickly led to a particularly daring solution initiated by merchant-merchants wishing to reduce the cost of manufacturing their furniture: European varnish. This technique, certainly inspired by the Italian craftsmen, allowed to obtain particularly decorative panels and especially to develop colours then absent from the art of oriental lacquerers.
