Not signed. 73 x 54 cm CONDITION REPORT: At the bottom of the painting, traces of moisture visible, stains are also visible in the lower part. Traces of humidity visible at the back. Blue light photos available upon request. Restoration in 2007 by Atelier Bernard Depretz 75008 Paris (restoration of the missing paintings and traces of humidity) Provenance: - Acquired directly from the artist around 1954 by the current owners, Mr. and Mrs. Alice Pole-Woods. - Estate of John and Alice Pole-Woods Related work : - Christies New York sale, November 19, 2008, lot 4 Attached: - a certificate of authenticity from Madame Lou Laurin-Lam dated 25/10/2007 - export certificate dated 10/06/2016 - copy of a color photograph showing Alice Pole in her Paris apartment in front of Lam's painting (February 1960) John POLE is American but from a very old English family famous during the Hundred Years War (John and William Pole at the time of Joan of Arc) and in the 16th century (Cardinal Reginald Pole at the Council of Trent, who almost became pope). Officer in the US Air Force, photographer in the aviation and intelligence services, then antique dealer in Paris, John Pole devotes himself totally to his passion for photography. Several personal exhibitions are dedicated to him. His reports have taken him to many countries in Africa, Europe and the Orient. With his wife Alice, he met the artist Wifredo LAM with whom they became friends in the 1950s; the proof is in the many letters that we are distributing during this sale. He retired around 1980 to the village of Pierrefitte sur Sauldre in Sologne.
