FRENCH SCHOOL of the first half of the XVIIth century, entourage of Guy FRANCOIS: Virgin with the Child and Saint John the Baptist, Original canvas and frame. 78 x 87,5 cm. Original frame: 91 x 100 cm. Guy François, known as "Le Grand François", was born in Le Puy en Velay in 1578 and died there in 1650. He was a French painter marked by Caravaggism whose work was mainly religious. In Rome in 1608, he was a member of the Academy of Saint Luke. In 1613, he is in Puy-en Velay, he opens a workshop where his son, Jean, and local painters will work, like François Lombard, native of Saint Flour or Jean Solvain. He received many commissions from the clergy, but also from important local families, such as the Polignacs or the La Rochefoucaults. His works appear in various museums: Toulouse, the Museum of Fine Arts in Angers, the Museum of the Ain in Bourg en Bresse, in the Louvre Museum as well as in many churches...
