VIRGILE. L'ENEIDE, translated into French verse (by P. Perri - Lot 46
VIRGILE. L'ENEIDE, translated into French verse (by P. Perrin). Paris, des caractères de P. Moreau... De la nouvelle imprimerie par luy faite et inventée. 1648-58. 2 volumes in-4, full contemporary binding, spine ribbed and decorated. CELEBRATED EDITION from Pierre Moreau's workshop, printed with special script characters. Only a few books are known to have come off his presses, and his "Virgile" is the finest. In addition to its typographical curiosity, the work is illustrated with 2 frontispieces and 12 mid-page plates by Abraham Bosse. The Map, which is often missing, is present here. Only the first volume was printed by Moreau, who died in 1648. The second volume was not published until 10 years later, by Loyson, in classical type. Stains, minor wear, some quires heavily foxed, spines split.
