On May 31, an exceptional collection of Gallo-Roman glassware and pottery from the "Roman Cemetery" of Soings-en-Sologne, the site where the greatest number of Roman objects were discovered in the Loir-et-Cher region, will be put up for sale at the office of Me Cornet in Blois. The first research began in the 19th century, thanks in particular to the eminent archeologist Louis de la Saussaye, but it was in 1933 that the most important excavations were carried out. Some of the objects unearthed were donated to the Château de Blois where they were the subject of an exhibition and a specific catalog in 2001. However, among the hundred or so objects offered at auction on May 31, several particular types are not represented in the castle's collections. We also note the presence of ceramics made nearly 2000 years ago in the potters' workshops of Thésée-la-Romaine, the ancient Tasciaca, whose impressive remains are still visible nearby. Finally, the cemetery has yielded a Venus emerging from the water, a type of statuette whose oldest example found in France was discovered in 1710... in Blois! It was while digging foundations in the vicinity of the church of Saint-Nicolas, the former Saint-Laumer abbey, that the monks found an ancient tomb with statuettes, including two Venuses, which were drawn by the Benedictine Bernard de Montfaucon. He reproduced them in his book l'Antiquité expliquée et représentée en figures, adding vine leaves to hide the sex modestly.

The sale of these objects of remarkable provenance, probably the last in private hands, will be a milestone in the ancient history of Sologne and the Val-de-Loire.
