Sam SZAFRAN (1934-2019) Untitled (1958). Mixed... - Lot 75 - Pousse-Cornet
Sam SZAFRAN (1934-2019) Untitled (1958). Mixed technique including bonding Signed, dated 1958 and autographed. 18.5 x 30 cm Born in 1934 in Paris, Sam Szafran escaped the Vel d'Hiv raid in 1942 and emigrated with his mother to Australia. Back in Paris in 1951, he entered the studio of Henri Goetz at the Académie de la Grande Chaumière from 1953 to 1958, where he met Nicolas de Staël, Jean-Paul Riopelle, Joan Mitchell, Yves Klein and Alberto Giacometti. It was during this period that he discovered the collages of Kurt Schwitters, the "materialologies" and "texturologies" of Jean Dubuffet, Simon Hantaï and Bernard Réquichot. The artist then favoured two techniques: watercolour and pastel to represent his workshops, his foliage or trees and his staircases. After three major retrospectives in Paris in 2000, in Cologne in 2010 and in Switzerland in 2013, the Claude Bernard gallery, which exhibited him from 1964 to 1987, is devoting a solo exhibition to him at the Grand Palais in Paris during the Biennial of 2019, the year of the artist's death.
