PENDE, Democratic Republic of Congo. Wood, natural pigments. Giphogo/Kipoko" helmet mask characterized by a blackened hairstyle, the face painted in red, the nose protruding and the large beard in a horizontal plateau. "The Pende have many types of masks that they wear, especially during adult initiation rituals. The giphogo (or kipoko) is one of these masks. The word giphogo means "sword wielder" and is a symbol of power among the Eastern Pendes. The mask is kept in the chief's house, and only chiefs are allowed to allow dancing with this type of mask during initiations and rituals of the Eastern Pende ancestor cult. Its uses include protection against evil spirits. Dim: 31x32x29, 5 cm. Small accidents and missing pieces.
