The lieutenant general of artillery Jean-Florent de Vallière (1667-1759) reforms the artillery of Louis XIV and Louis XV. He is at the origin of the royal decree of October 7, 1732, whose objective is to impose simpler and more uniform models of guns for the artillery. The calibers adopted are 33, 24, 16, 12, 8 and 4 pounds. The organization of the tubes and the ammunition are thought as a whole. The weight of the tube is about 250 times that of the cannonball; the mass of the powder charge is equal to 2/3 of that of the cannonball; the trunnions are of a diameter and a length corresponding to the dimensions of the cannonball. The other parts of the equipment were not given specific dimensions and remained variable from one province to another. Despite some improvements, no official distinction was made between field and siege equipment. The Vallière system did not solve the problem of mobility, and the scoring system remained sketchy and random.
