PAIR OF CHENETS in chased and gilded bronze... - Lot 150 - Pousse-Cornet
PAIR OF CHENETS in chased and gilded bronze decorated with dragons with spread wings resting on moving bases chased with foliage and medallions with a man's profile. Regency style, 19th century. H. 27 cm - L. 28 cm. (Wear and tear to the gilding, presence of green of gray) During the Regency and the beginning of the reign of Louis XV, there was an exceptional renewal of forms and motifs in the French decorative arts. Certain fantastic animals, such as dragons, became the preferred ornaments of the craftsmen and artists of the period. Our model can be compared to the work of Charles Cressent, cabinetmaker-bronzier, to whom a pair of the same kind is attributed: they are more elaborate andirons on which lions emerge from rocaille on which dragons are crouching (sale in Paris, Me Chayette, December 6, 1989, lot 101). For similar examples, see in particular a first pair, the medallion decorated with an acanthus leaf (Christie's sale, London, July 6, 2006, lot 3), as well as a second pair, with figures in the style of André-Charles Boulle, from the collection of the Countess B.G. de Maigret (sale in Paris, March 10, 1980, lot 43)
