IMPORTANT Mantelpiece in Sienna marble and... - Lot 155 - Pousse-Cornet
IMPORTANT Mantelpiece in Sienna marble and patinated bronze including a clock and a pair of vases with swan neck handles. The clock probably representing the suicide of Ajax. Restoration period. Dim (clock): 60 x 48 cm. Height (vase): 36 cm. According to the Odyssey, after the death of Achilles, Ajax recovers, with the help of Athena, the body of the latter from the hands of the Trojans and competes with Odysseus for the honor of receiving his weapons. Athena and a group of imprisoned Trojan children (who are asked who of Odysseus or Ajax has caused more harm to Troy) guide Agamemnon in his decision. Ajax is thus not chosen, and his disappointment makes him mad: he rushes out of his tent and slaughters a herd of sheep in the camp, thinking he is killing Greek leaders. Coming back to his senses, he kills himself in shame with the sword he had received as a gift from Hector.
