Paul-Ange NOCQUET (1877-1906) : sculpture... - Lot 132 - Pousse-Cornet
Paul-Ange NOCQUET (1877-1906) : sculpture in plaster with a patina in imitation of bronze representing Bacchus seated unbalanced on a rock, clutching a vine with his right hand and carrying a bunch of grapes in his mouth. Signed on the rock. Beginning of the 20th century. Originally from Belgium, Nocquet trained with Jef Lambeaux and won the Godecharle Prize in 1900. He exchanged his boarding school in Rome for a stay in Paris where he frequented the studios of Antoine Mercié, Jean-Léon Gérôme and met Auguste Rodin. In 1903, the artist moved to New York; in 1906, the American Art Association of the city paid tribute to him by organizing a retrospective exhibition, following his death in a balloon accident.
