INTERESTING English-made wooden COFFRE covered with dark-bro - Lot 120
INTERESTING English-made wooden COFFRE covered with dark-brown leather and adorned with round-headed brass nails forming an 8-pointed star on the lid with, in the center, an embossed brass medallion featuring the insignia of the King of France's Gardes-du-corps, the face on a radiant background (diam. 12.3 cm), the initials "J F", on the front on either side of the lock, two geometric motifs surmounted by the British royal crown (reign of George II), in the center of the lock with a 3rd royal crown. The latch of the lock is stamped with "patent" and the British royal crown, the bottom is lined with paper printed with floral motifs, brass side carrying handles. 18th century. 63 x 28 x 36 cm. ABE (wear and tear) This chest of British origin seems to have belonged to a servant of King George II (1693-1760), if one counts no less than three stylized royal crowns on the front, and probably to an officer. The ancient presence on the lid of the perfectly identified plaque of the King of France's Gardes-du-Corps, framed by an 8-pointed star that evokes the cross of Saint Louis created by Louis XIV in 1683, suggests that this chest was taken in war by a member of the King's Gardes-du-Corps. Throughout the 18th century, the English and French met on the battlefields of the deadly Wars of the Austrian Succession and the Seven Years' War. CNES expert: Laurent Mirouze
