Carved oak figure of the Magi. Balthazar - Lot 112
Carved oak figure of the Magi. Balthazar
Brabant, probably Brussels, circa 1480-1500.
H. 62 cm
This figure originally belonged to an altarpiece probably depicting scenes from the Passion of Christ, and more specifically the scene of the Adoration of the Magi.
Similarities in pose, the presence of a dog and the style of dress of our Magi King Balthazar can be noted with the Magi represented on the left in the print by the engraver Schongauer, Martin (Colmar, in 1450 - in 1491), dated between 1470 and 1475 and kept at the Petit Palais, musée des Beaux-arts de la Ville de Paris (GDUT8611).
