INDIA: Two wooden panels with lion and Yali motifs. Tamil Na - Lot 205
INDIA: Two wooden panels with lion and Yali motifs. Tamil Nadu 18th century or earlier. 65 x 29 cm (approx.). The Yali, an animal with the body of a lion and the tusks of an elephant, is an animal from Hindu mythology, especially represented in the temples of southern India, such as the Tamil Nadu region. The heavy weight of these pieces testifies to the quality of the wood and their vocation to embellish a building rather than to be transported, as was the case with chariot panels.
