2 vols. LA CHAMBRE H. and MACHURON Al. Andrée. Au pôle Nord au ballon. Paris, Nilsson, no date (1898). In 12 ½ calf binding. Minor wear and rubbing. Illustrations from photographs. Account of the failed 1897 North Pole balloon expedition. Shortly after leaving Svalbard in July 1897, the balloon lost hydrogen and crashed on the pack ice after only two days of travel. The explorers escaped unharmed, but had to embark on a perilous trek southwards across the drifting ice. Ill-dressed, ill-prepared and ill-equipped for such an adventure, and surprised by the difficulty of the undertaking, they were unable to find an escape route. Caught by winter in October, they ended up exhausted and dead on the deserted island of Kvitøya. DUMUYS Léon. Voyage aux pays des fjords. De Paris au Cap-Nord de Bergen à Stockholm.
