Frédéric WATTEEL (1915- 2003). Turned bottle in partially black-glazed stoneware. Signed and dated 1973. H : 20,5cm. Frédéric Watteel was born in Ancourt (76) in 1915. A self-taught artist, he taught ceramics at the Ecole des Arts Décoratifs in Strasbourg from 1949 to 1978. "I was lucky enough to meet Mr. Watteel in December 1956. (...) In thirty years of teaching, Watteel had more than one hundred and twenty students, to whom he communicated his passion for clay. Most of them have been able to live this passion". (Michel Delmotte, July 1988, in catalog of the exhibition "Réflexions sur Watteel", Maison de la Céramique, Mulhouse, 1988-1989). "Stoneware potters. Sceaux et signatures de 1941 à 1985" (2010) opens with an extract from the reply Frédéric Watteel sent to Denis Goudenhooft, "jeune potier", on November 22, 1971; Denis, who has removed the personal passages, "omits" to specify that Frédéric is his maternal great-uncle... Provenance: Denis Goudenhooft collection.
