Denis GOUDENHOOFT (1948-2024) - Eric SURMELY (1957-2024), Ju - Lot 141
Denis GOUDENHOOFT (1948-2024) - Eric SURMELY (1957-2024), Jumièges. Set of 2 water butter dishes, turned, in 2 parts, Saint Amand stoneware, Jumièges, late 70s/1980s: The first by Denis GOUDENHOOFT: "Chailloux" enamel (yellow), signed in oxide "DG" (H: 12 - Diam: 11 cm); the second by Eric SURMELY: white and pink enamel, signed with his seal (H: 10 - Diam: 12 cm). Eric Surmely completed his apprenticeship between 1978 and 1980 at the Denis Goudenhooft workshop in Jumièges. For these 2 utilitarian pieces, the same workshop, the same wheel, the same tools, the same kiln... but each has his own way of turning and throwing. However, the enamel recipes learned in Jumièges could still lead to confusion between the two works, even when Eric set up his workshop in Angoulême in 1981 to strike out on his own. Bibliography: "Potiers et Céramistes de Haute-Normandie 1945-1998. Sceaux et signatures", exhibition catalog at Galerie Complément d'Objet, Rouen, 1999, p.31 and p.53. Provenance: Denis Goudenhooft collection.
