Denis GOUDENHOOFT (1948-2024). - Lot 366
Denis GOUDENHOOFT (1948-2024). "Tatou", porcelain sculpture, black enamel, 21st century, unsigned. Unique piece. L. 45.5 cm. Provenance: Denis Goudenhooft collection. The first "tatous" date back to 2004, when Denis Goudenhooft rebuilt a personal studio in Martot after almost 20 years of "creative passivity", and took up porcelain casting once again. Then celadon, they gave rise to a solo exhibition entitled "Tatous", in Rouen, Galerie Daniel Duchoze (catalog enclosed). "Au recommencement was the idea of questioning the individual (from the Latin individuum, "indivisible body"), his generation, his impossibility of living without others, and his need to assert his uniqueness... Au recommencement was a genetic heritage of 21 molds, which arbitrarily combined by 9 - good pleasure or absolutism - gave life to the armadillos. "Each armadillo is built around a radical that is identical for all [molding of a paving stone on Rue Saint Nicolas in Rouen]*. Eight elements, four on each side, articulate a strange volume composed of cylinders and parallelepipeds. While the parallelepipeds are visibly and deliberately molded from a plant - wood - the cylindrical ends are just as deliberately made from a material without precise reference". * DG's first gallery in Rouen, "Complément d'Objet", founded in 1987, is located at 20 rue saint-Nicolas. DG's first black armadillos will be presented in 2008 (during the exhibition "Blanc et noir", in duo with photographer Paul-Richard Perret, at the Complément d'Objet gallery in Martot) and in "Populations", in 2011, during his eponymous exhibition at the Rive Gauche in Saint-Etienne-du-Rouvray (invitation enclosed).
