FIREARMS. Gendarmerie model 1842 T walnut-mounted snap hook, - Lot 303
FIREARMS. Gendarmerie model 1842 T walnut-mounted snap hook, iron fittings, short-sided round barrel with thunderbolt stamped "PV" (PALIARD-VIALLETON), fixed rise, rear sight, bayonet lug, percussion front lock marked "Manufacture Impériale de St-Etienne", iron ramrod. L: 114 cm, barrel: 76.8 cm. Second Empire period. Weapon cleaned. BE This curious snap hook, whose dimensions correspond to the 1842 regulation model, was made from a shortened rifle of the same system. The fittings are in iron, and the lock is the same size as the rifle, as is the counterplate. The barrel markings of the PALIARD-VIALLETON arms manufacturer in Saint-Etienne, which produced regulation weapons for the Kingdom of Piedmont-Sardinia, suggest that this may have been a "necessity" weapon produced for the 1871 National Defense government. This musket comes from a town hall in central France, which saw action during the winter of 1870-1871.
