MONTAIGNE. Journal of Michel de Montaigne’s Journey to Italy and Subsequently to Germany in 1580 & 1581, with notes by M. de Querlon. Rome and Paris: Le Jay, 1774. 3 vols., small 12mo, in full contemporary binding with a smooth, decorated spine. Minor foxing and wear on several caps and corners. 1 engraved portrait as a frontispiece. One of the three editions published by Le Jay on the same date. The distinctive feature of this edition is that the third volume is bilingual, with the French text on one side and the Italian text with Bartoli’s notes on the other. The manuscript of this posthumous work remained unpublished until 1774 and was discovered by Abbé Prunis among the papers at the Château de Montaigne.
