Leaving Iraq due to the political climate, Massoudy settled in France in 1969. As a student at the École des Beaux-Arts, he developed his figurative painting technique, eventually incorporating the art of calligraphy and making it a central element of his body of work. In the 1970s, he formed a trio with Guy Jacquet and Fawzy Al Aïedy called the group Khamsa, organizing performances titled “L’Arabesque à voir et à entendre,” an artistic performance in which music, Arabic songs, and calligraphy projected onto a screen were the main elements of the show.
