CHAIR in molded beech, carved and cream-lacquered, with a square backrest, connecting blocks decorated with rosettes, and a tapered, fluted base with ridges. Stamped G.IACOB (Georges Jacob, admitted as a master craftsman in 1765) and bearing the mark of the furniture repository at the Château de Châteauneuf-sur-Loire (C9 beneath a closed crown flanked on either side by a marine anchor).
Louis XVI period
H: 89 - W: 50 - D: 45 cm (modern fabric upholstery slightly faded by sunlight, wear on the lacquer)
This chair was delivered by Georges Jacob as part of the furnishings for the Château de Châteauneuf-sur-Loire during the time of the Duke of Penthièvre (1725–1793), grandson of Louis XIV. He purchased the château in 1784 from the Rohan-Guéménée family, along with all the furnishings, for the considerable sum of 50,000 livres. As with his other residences, he commissioned Georges Jacob and Roger Van der Cruse, known as Lacroix. The château’s contents were seized during the Revolution, sent to Tours, and then to Paris to be sold without reserve.
For an identical chair model, see the Artcurial auction, December 13, 2023, Paris.
