Egypt. Fragment of a bas-relief with a hieroglyphic inscript - Lot 708
Egypt. Fragment of a bas-relief with a hieroglyphic inscription featuring a cartouche with the name of Pharaoh Ptolemy(?) with an unusual spelling (notably the first hieroglyph, the bird with spread wings, transcribing the phoneme P/PA). If the reading of the dynastic name is confirmed, this variant, which appears to be unknown, suggests dating the inscription to Ptolemy I, when the transliteration of his Greek name into hieroglyphs was not yet standardized by usage. Early Hellenistic period (c. 305-300 BC)? Limestone. H. 38 cm, W. 33 cm, Th. 3 cm. Accents, wear and visible gluing. Traces of rust from screw mounting on an old display stand. Acquired in the late 1990s from M. Jeuillard, an antique dealer specializing in Asian art and archaeology.
